Livestock insurance generally relates to farm animals such as cattle, bulls, sheep, rams, goats, alpacas and other eligible production or stud animals. Bloodstock insurance relates to valuable horses, particularly thoroughbreds, broodmares, stallions, foals and breeding stock. Different underwriting, valuation, veterinary and policy conditions can apply to each category.
Depending on insurer appetite, cover may be available for individual bulls and rams, stud cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, herd livestock, thoroughbreds, racehorses, broodmares, stallions, foals and other declared horses. Eligibility depends on species, breed, age, health, intended use, value and location.
Mortality cover can pay the insured or agreed value when an animal dies or must be humanely destroyed following a covered accident, illness or disease. Loss-of-use cover may respond when an insured stud animal permanently loses its declared function without dying. The definitions, evidence requirements and exclusions vary significantly between policies.
Some specialist stud stock and bloodstock policies can begin from the fall of the hammer or another agreed purchase point, including approved transit from the sale. Cover is not automatic unless the policy or binder confirms it, so insurance should be arranged before or immediately when responsibility for the animal transfers.
Useful information includes species, breed, age, sex, identification, pedigree, purchase price or valuation, intended use, health history, current veterinary information, location, security, transport plans and the cover period required. Higher-value animals, foals and certain extensions may require a veterinary certificate or additional underwriting evidence.
