FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does hospitality insurance cover?
Hospitality insurance can combine several types of cover to protect your premises, fit-out, contents, stock, equipment, income, customers and business operations. Depending on the policy selected, cover may include property damage, public and products liability, business interruption, equipment breakdown, food spoilage, glass, theft, money, cyber insurance and management liability. Cover, limits, excesses and exclusions vary between insurers, so your policy should be tailored to how your hospitality business operates.
Do cafes and restaurants need public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance is strongly recommended for cafés, restaurants and other hospitality venues because customers, suppliers and members of the public regularly enter the premises. It can help protect your business against claims involving third-party injury or property damage, such as slips, falls, burns or accidental damage. Public liability may also be required by a landlord, shopping centre, council, event organiser or commercial lease. Workers compensation is generally arranged separately for employee injuries.
Can hospitality insurance cover equipment breakdown and spoiled stock?
Equipment breakdown insurance may cover the sudden mechanical or electrical failure of insured equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, cool rooms, coffee machines, ovens and commercial kitchen appliances. Depending on the policy, cover may also be available for refrigerated stock or food spoiled following an insured equipment breakdown. Normal wear and tear, poor maintenance and gradual deterioration are generally excluded, and stock-spoilage limits may apply. All important equipment and stock values should be accurately declared.
What types of hospitality businesses can be covered?
Hospitality insurance may be arranged for cafés, coffee shops, restaurants, takeaway shops, bakeries, caterers, food trucks, coffee vans, pubs, bars, clubs, hotels, function venues and other food or beverage businesses. The appropriate cover will depend on factors such as your premises, turnover, staff numbers, cooking methods, equipment, alcohol service, delivery operations and opening hours. Insurer acceptance and policy conditions will vary according to the individual business and its risk profile.
Does hospitality insurance cover business interruption?
Business interruption insurance may help replace lost income and pay continuing expenses when an insured event—such as fire, storm or insured property damage—forces your hospitality business to close or reduce trading. Depending on the policy, it may assist with expenses such as wages, rent and temporary operating costs during the recovery period. It does not generally cover ordinary trading downturns, voluntary closures or events excluded by the policy. The selected indemnity period and insured gross profit should reflect a realistic recovery timeframe.
