CROP & PRODUCE INSURANCE FAQs
What does crop and produce insurance cover?
Cover depends on the insurer and policy selected. It may protect growing crops against specified events such as fire and hail, while separate or optional sections can address harvested produce, storage, transit or other nominated risks. Your schedule, exclusions, excesses and limits determine the actual protection.
Are fire and hail automatically covered?
Not in every policy. Fire-only, hail-only or combined fire and hail options may be available, and additional perils must be specifically accepted by the insurer. ABS will explain the wording, excesses and exclusions before cover is placed.
What crops and produce can be insured?
Eligible risks may include cereals, oilseeds, pulses and other broadacre crops, as well as selected horticultural crops, orchards, vineyards and specialty produce. Availability varies by crop type, location, growing method, season and insurer appetite.
Does crop insurance cover harvested produce in storage or transit?
It can, but this protection should not be assumed. Harvested grain or produce stored at the farm, at another location or moving in transit may need a specific extension or a separate produce, farm property or transit policy.
What information is needed for a crop insurance quote?
Insurers commonly request the crop type and variety, planted area, property location, paddock maps, expected yield or value, sowing and harvest dates, storage arrangements, previous claims and the perils required. Accurate declarations help us obtain appropriate terms.
