ABOUT RESTAURANT INSURANCE

Built for Busy Restaurants.
Designed Around Your Risks.

Running a restaurant brings together customers, staff, food preparation, valuable kitchen equipment, perishable stock and, for licensed venues, alcohol service. ABS helps arrange tailored restaurant insurance for property and fit-out, public and products liability, machinery breakdown, refrigerated stock, glass, theft and interruption to trading—subject to insurer terms.

WHAT CAN RESTAURANT INSURANCE COVER?

Practical Cover for Your Restaurant Business

Public & Products Liability

Can respond to claims alleging customer injury, third-party property damage, food poisoning or allergic reactions arising from restaurant operations, subject to the policy.

Property, Contents & Fit-Out

Can protect an owned building, leasehold fit-out, furniture, POS systems, kitchen equipment, stock and contents against selected events such as fire, storm, impact and malicious damage.

Machinery Breakdown & Spoilage

Options may cover sudden mechanical or electrical breakdown of cool rooms, refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers and other insured equipment, plus resulting refrigerated stock loss.

Business Interruption

May cover lost gross profit and increased operating costs when an insured property event prevents your restaurant from trading, subject to the selected indemnity period and limits.

Glass, Theft & Money

Can cover accidental breakage of shopfront or internal glass and signage, theft following forcible entry, resulting premises damage, and insured money at the premises or in transit.

Liquor, Cyber & Employee Risks

Depending on your operation, liquor-related liability, cyber insurance, management liability, commercial motor and workers compensation may also need to be considered. Workers compensation is arranged separately.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What insurance does a restaurant need?

A restaurant may need public and products liability, property and contents, leasehold fit-out, glass, theft, machinery breakdown, refrigerated stock deterioration and business interruption cover. Liquor-related liability, cyber, commercial motor, management liability and workers compensation may also be relevant depending on the venue, staff and services.

Public and products liability may respond to claims involving customer slips and falls, third-party property damage, food poisoning or allergic reactions caused by food or drinks you serve, subject to policy terms, exclusions and the selected liability limit. Employee injuries are generally handled separately through workers compensation.

Machinery breakdown cover may protect insured cool rooms, refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, ice machines and other kitchen equipment against sudden mechanical or electrical failure. Refrigerated stock deterioration can sometimes be included for food spoiled following an insured breakdown. Wear and tear and poor maintenance are generally excluded.

Business interruption insurance may cover lost gross profit, ongoing expenses and additional operating costs when insured property damage prevents your restaurant from trading. The triggering event, gross profit sum insured, waiting period and indemnity period should be selected carefully because they determine how the cover responds.

Restaurants serving alcohol should disclose their liquor licence, trading hours, entertainment and security arrangements to the insurer. Some liability policies include or extend to alcohol-related incidents, while others apply conditions or exclusions. Your broker should confirm the wording matches your venue and responsible-service obligations.
