WHAT CAN TRADIES INSURANCE COVER?

Practical Cover for Tradies & Subcontractors

Public & Products Liability

Can respond when your trade business is legally liable for third-party injury or property damage caused by your work, products or completed operations, subject to policy terms.

Tools & Portable Equipment

Can protect insured hand tools, power tools, test equipment, laptops and other portable items against selected theft, accidental damage and insured events at worksites or in transit.

Commercial Motor & Trailers

Cover options are available for work utes, vans and other commercial vehicles. Registered trailers, fixed accessories and carried tools may require separate limits or policies.

Contract Works & Materials

Contract works insurance may protect the works, materials and certain existing property during construction or renovation when your contract makes you responsible for the project risk.

Options may cover owned or hired mobile plant, machinery, generators, compressors and specialist equipment, including selected damage, theft and liability exposures.

Personal Accident, Professional & Statutory Risks

Depending on your trade, consider personal accident and illness, professional indemnity for advice or design, tax audit, cyber and statutory liability. Workers compensation is arranged separately.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What insurance does a tradie or subcontractor need?

A tradie or subcontractor commonly considers public and products liability, tools and portable equipment, commercial motor and trailer cover. Contract works may be needed when you are responsible for works or materials. Depending on your occupation, plant and equipment, personal accident and illness, professional indemnity, statutory liability and workers compensation may also be relevant.

Your public liability policy covers the insured business and declared employees according to its wording, but independently engaged subcontractors are generally expected to maintain their own insurance and Certificate of Currency. Injuries to employees are normally handled through workers compensation rather than public liability, subject to the applicable state or territory arrangements.

Tool insurance may cover insured tools against theft from a locked vehicle, secure worksite storage or other specified locations, but forcible-entry evidence, security conditions, item limits and overnight restrictions often apply. Open-air theft and tools left unattended may be excluded unless specifically extended. High-value tools should be individually listed where required.

Contract works insurance may be appropriate when your contract makes you responsible for physical loss or damage to the works, materials, temporary works or certain existing property during construction or renovation. A subcontractor performing labour-only work may rely on the principal contractor’s policy, but this should be confirmed in writing rather than assumed.

Commercial motor insurance can cover a ute, van or other vehicle used for work, with selected cover for fixed accessories. Loose tools, stock and materials usually require separate portable property or transit cover. Registered trailers may also need their own policy or to be specifically noted, so the vehicle, accessories, tools and trailer should all be reviewed together.
